Should Medications be Coadministered with Albumin in Hypoalbuminemic Patients
نویسنده
چکیده
Protein binding significantly influences pharmacokinetic properties of drug distribution. Albumin accounts for approximately 60% of the total plasma protein by mass, thereby making it the major protein in the body. Hypoalbuminemia, a type of hypoproteinemia, is a condition of abnormally low blood albumin levels. Hypoaluminemia causes pharmacokinetic issues in regards to dosing a patient's medication. The purpose of this paper is to review the role of the coadministration of albumin in hypoalbuminemic patients to optimize pharmacotherapy.

Unexpected Normal Colloid Osmotic Pressure in Clinical States with Low Serum Albumin
BACKGROUND In clinical states associated with systemic oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), oxidative modifications of serum albumin impair its quantification, resulting in apparent hypoalbuminemia. As the maintenance of oncotic pressure/colloid osmotic pressure (COP) is a major function of albumin, this study examined the impact of albumin oxidation on C...
متن کاملEffects of albumin/furosemide mixtures on responses to furosemide in hypoalbuminemic patients.
Hypoalbuminemic patients often have sufficient fluid accumulation to mandate diuretic therapy but are often resistant to diuresis. Studies have suggested that hypoalbuminemia itself impairs delivery of effective amounts of diuretic agent into the urine, the site of action. Therefore, administration of mixtures of albumin and loop diuretics may enhance responses. Thirteen patients with biopsy-pr...
متن کاملAlbumin in Health and Disease: Causes and Treatment of Hypoalbuminemia*
When disease leads to moderate or severe hypoalbuminemia (i.e., albumin <2 mg/dl), detrimental consequences may influence the clinical course and negatively impact the prognosis. In fact, multiple human studies and a few veterinary ones have shown hypoalbuminemia to be correlated with a poorer prognosis. Treatment considerations for hypoalbuminemic patients should address the consequences and c...

We assessed the clinical utility of measuring thyrotropin (TSH) in serum by immunoradiometry and of measuring total thyroxin (TT4), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free thyroxin (FT4), and free triiodothyronine (FT3). We used a group of 110 healthy volunteers, 45 ill hypoalbuminemic patients, and 42 ill normoalbuminemic patients. In addition, the free thyroxin index (FTI) and TT4:thyroxin-binding...
متن کاملEffect of albumin on the inhibition of platelet aggregation by beta-lactam antibiotics.
Platelet aggregation and bleeding time abnormalities are reported in patients receiving beta-lactam antibiotics (beta LAs), although clinical bleeding most frequently occurs in chronically ill, malnourished patients. Although most beta LAs bind to serum albumin, the relative influence of bound versus unbound beta LAs on platelet function is unknown. We examined the effect of beta LAs on the agg...
